Dear AGO Colleagues and Friends,
I am pleased to announce that one month from tonight.....Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m..... Dr. Charles
Tompkins, Professor of Organ at Furman University and a well-known recitalist, will lead an
AGO-sponsored workshop for our chapter at Christ Anglican Church on Johnson Square. I regret that a
Tuesday night event may be a conflict for a number of you, but we had to work around Dr. Tompkins'
schedule: he will be the sole organ recitalist in this year's Savannah Music Festival, and he will be in town
that week to practice for his upcoming concert.
Dr. Tompkins has entitled his workshop "Service Music from the Classical Literature: What to Practice
When Time is of the Essence" (alternatively, "Relatively Easy Pieces That Connect with Congregations").
He will be citing (and playing parts of) works by such composers as Frescobaldi, Bach, Couperin, Boyce,
Brahms, Alain, and others...works from historic organ literature. The workshop will be held in the Christ
Church choir loft.....more instructions later about how to enter, and so forth...and will be followed by a
reception in the church undercroft, a social time to chat with Dr. Tompkins and each other!
All are welcome to attend what is sure to be an exciting and informative evening. There will be a $5.00 fee
for non-AGO members.
I would really like to have an R.S.V.P. for this event in order to know how many to prepare for (chairs in the
choir loft, goodies for the reception, and so forth). By now, most of our AGO members know me well
enough to predict that I'll badger you for a reply (if I haven't heard from you) as the day draws near!
On another subject...our colleague Roger Byrd will be undergoing triple bypass surgery on Thursday.
Please keep him in your prayers!
Faithfully, Pam
